Inverter/charger manufacturers often provide their own unique charging characteristics and Victron Energy equipment is no exception. These profiles may be preset in the equipment or provided in product documentation.
To ensure Rolls R-Series, G-Series, S-Series or VB-Series LFP drop-in replacement batteries are charged correctly using Victron Energy components, the following recommendations and configurations should be considered.
Recommendations
- Do not use a Lead-Acid battery profile. Configure the batteries using a User Defined profile.
- Enable Expert Mode to expose all available charging parameters.
- Absorption Duration should be set to Fixed, not Adaptive. Adaptive absorption can terminate charging prematurely, causing the charger to transition to Float before the batteries have reached a true 100% state of charge and completed balancing.
- Absorption Time should generally be 40–60 minutes, allowing approximately 20–30 minutes for each battery connected in parallel. Systems with charging currents below approximately 10% of the battery bank's C20 capacity may require longer absorption times to achieve a complete charge and proper balancing.
- Tail Current should be set appropriately. For two 150 Ah batteries connected in parallel, I recommend a setting of 3 amps or less. A higher Tail Current can cause the charger to exit absorption prematurely, preventing the batteries from fully balancing. There is no harm in letting the chargers absoroption charge for longer.
- Temperature Compensation should be disabled.
- Any Battery Temperature Sensors (BTS) connected to the charger should be physically disconnected, as the battery's internal Battery Management System (BMS) already manages temperature-related protection.

When connected with Rolls R-Series, G-Series, S-Series or VB-Series LFP drop-in replacement models, these recommended configuration settings will provide a general baseline for Victron Energy equipment. However, specific adjustments may be necessary based on the charge output, available charge time, and quantity of batteries connected.
It is also important to verify that the batteries are periodically reaching a true full charge so the BMS can complete cell balancing. If the system routinely transitions to Float voltage before balancing has been completed, small variances in voltage and SOC% can accumulate over time, eventually resulting in state-of-charge drift and reduced overall battery-bank performance.
If the batteries are not consistently reaching a true 100% state of charge, or if a slight imbalance appears over time, small adjustments to these settings may be necessary. As an initial step, a slight increase to the fixed absorption time should be considered first before changing any other charging parameters.
To address and correct imbalance across a bank of LFP drop-in replacement batteries, the proper procedure is to charge each battery to 100% SOC independently and reconnect. As LFP drop-in replacement batteries do not communicate and are independently connected in an open loop configuration, much like traditional lead-acid models, balancing is typically required every 9-18 months.
